I wanted to share with you a disease that you may not have heard about. It is called Scleroderma. Scleroderma, an autoimmune disease primarily affecting women between the ages of 30 and 50, has no known cause or cure. With symptoms ranging from hardening skin and joint pain, to digestive issues and lung scarring, Scleroderma often leaves sufferers feeling confused, scared, and isolated, in addition to the physical pain they endure every day. If you did not know, this disease can be fatal. Stiff joints, digestive issues, lung scarring, and kidney failure are just a few symptoms related to it. This is scary and it is time to make a difference and be aware. Scleroderma affects thousands of people, but majority of the world knows nothing about it. The disease is so rare; it only affects 1 in 906 people, with 80% of patients being female. Check out this infographic below to learn more!
As you can see 85% have a 5 year survival rate. This disease is scary because it has no known cure. Scleroderma affects people of all ages, genders and ethnicities. Everyday life can be difficult for people that suffer this disease. In June, Scleroderma Awareness Month, the Scleroderma Foundation, Scleroderma Research Foundation, and the Scleroderma Society of Canada are joining forces to help increase awareness for Scleroderma. Take the pledge to tell one person about the autoimmune disease that has no cause or cure. You can participate in the Thunderclap promotion to raise awareness on World Scleroderma Day, June 29. Take the pledge below!
From the Thunderclap website:
On June 29, World Scleroderma Day, let’s spread the word about scleroderma by sending a social media message across the world. Support this Thunderclap to help us raise awareness for scleroderma and raise scleroderma patients’ spirits. Support this Thunderclap to shout out loud with all of us—all at once. To help us spread the word about scleroderma to the world:
1. Support our message on your Facebook or Twitter page (or both). On June 29, if we’ve reached our supporter goal, the message will be shared on your social media accounts.
2. Encourage your friends and family members to support our Thunderclap so we can have an even bigger reach and an even louder voice.
3. Watch as your messages are simultaneously shared around the world. Keep your eyes on Facebook and Twitter, and follow along throughout Scleroderma Awareness Month by tracking #HardWord.
Will YOU make a difference and support this cause today?
