Studies have shown that the kitchen is that room in the house that has the most germs. Considering this is the place where food is prepared, it’s clear we need to focus the use of our elbow grease just a bit more in this area. It’s not the most exciting household chore to do, but it just has to be done - although that’s not to say we can’t take a few shortcuts when doing so!
Check out these nifty cleaning hacks for your kitchen:
1. Lemon: to clean dirty pans and baking trays
Squeeze a fresh lemon into a basin of hot water with baking soda and soak pots, pans, and baking dishes in this solution for a few minutes to let the grease slide right off.
2. Vinegar + Baking Soda: to wash away grease and odors in the dishwasher
Fill the dishwasher-safe container with vinegar. Then, let the machine run through a hot-water cycle. Do this two or more times and lastly, sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom of your dishwasher, leave it overnight and run an empty cycle the morning after.
3. Onion: to clean grill grates
All you’ll need to do is to take half a white onion - peeled - and rub it along the grates of your hot grill. This will de-glaze the grill grates, and add flavor to your grilled dinner.
4. Dish Soap + Baking Soda : to clean all parts of your refrigerator
Mix a teaspoon of your chosen dish soap, baking soda, and 3-4 cups of water. Use this to wipe clean your refrigerator. You can do it with a microfiber cloth or a dish cloth. Either of them works totally great.
5. Lemon + Salt: to deep clean wooden cutting boards
Coarse salt and a lemon - just rub these on your wooden cutting board to remove hidden bacteria, grime, and other germs.
6. Vinegar: to steam clean the microwave
You can’t exactly fit a microwave into a dishwasher for cleaning, so do this instead: Heat a bowl of water and vinegar mixture in the microwave for 10 minutes in order to steam clean the interiors of your microwave.
7. Vegetable Oil + Baking Soda: to get gunk off of the kitchen cabinet.
Blend baking soda and vegetable oil and use it to scrub your cabinet doors. It’s an inexpensive yet effective way to clean and shine your kitchen cabinet.
8. Lemon: to freshen up the garbage bin
Simply cut a lemon in half, and shove it into the garbage bin where it can absorb foul-odors.
9. Socks: to clean floors
When you’re feeling too lazy to mop and sweep the floors, just put on chenille socks to walk around in all day. You’ll be picking up dust and dirt off of the floor while doing virtually nothing.
10. Microwave: to sanitize the kitchen sponge.
Kitchen sponges have been found to be the kitchen item with the most germs, so sanitizing them regularly is an absolute must. Simply zap your kitchen sponge in the microwave for 2 minutes and it should be good to go!
The kitchen is where most of the food we feed ourselves and our families starts out from, so cleaning it should be top priority. With the cleaning hacks presented above, doing so should be quick and easy!
